Does any one know what excessive carbon monoxide means on the 25/25 test for emissions?

is referring to also Oxides of nitrogen levels mean. Another thing what do those testers check for a friends car failed 3 on the 25/25 and 1 on the 50/15. I'd appreciate any help I can get for this, I hope to give someone a great holiday present
