I have a electrical question about my computer.?

Why will my computer come up when I plug it in at another location but not at my house? I took my computer in because I thought there was something wrong with it at the computer shop. They plugged it in and told me the battery was giving it to much power so they took that out and wa la it booted up just fine. So I bring it home pulled the battery pluged it in to a power strip and got no power. Other things were plugged into the strip and those items were working just fine. So I unplugged the computer took it to another room plugged it directly into the socket and still got no power took it another room did the same thing and got nothing. How is it that this computer is coming up at the computer shop but not at my home hmmmm
