What led to the development of absolute monarchies?

Originally, family heads, then tribal chieftains, then warrior-chiefs. The militarily successful gathered great power, and eventually such leaders as the Merovingians and Carolingians in France came to believe that the newly acquired God of the Christian Religion had ordained their kingship. In the rest of the world, a similar scenario was enacted, and similar concepts of absolute rule developed.
